ALDERMAN Following a lengthy illness, God opened His arms to receive Russell O'Neal Alderman, of Jacksonville, on Feb. 10, 2012 in the surroundings of love, prayer, and his family. He was born in Avon Park, FL on Aug. 9, 1932, the son of David O. and Nelda C. Alderman. He was a 1950 graduate of Leon High School in Tallahassee and received both his Bachelor and Master of Science in Education from Florida State University, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova University. His 7 years of honorable service in the U.S. Marine Corps included 14 months of combat duty in the Korean Conflict. His career as an educator began in Panama City, FL as a teacher and principal in local elementary schools. He served as an educational consultant with Harper-Row Publishers before joining the Duval Public School System, serving in various staff capacities for 25 years, most notably as Director of Title I and Staff Development. He held memberships in Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity; Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa, both education honorary societies. He served as chairman of both the Florida Compensatory Education Advisory Council and the Florida Association of Staff Development along with varied committee positions in Florida Association of Curriculum Development. Community affiliations include: Arlington Masonic Lodge #309, F & AM, Flotilla Commander of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 14-8, a member of the Board of Directors of the NE Florida Community Action Agency, a member of Murray Hill Baptist Church where he served as a choir member, deacon, trustee, past moderator, and beloved Sunday School teacher. Upon his retirement he and Dolores traveled extensively throughout the world. He is fondly remembered by his family for his love of God, family, Seminole football, fishing and NASCAR, where much of his time was spent in his later years. He is survived by his caretaker and devoted wife of 54 years, Dolores; 3 children, David (June), Dawn (Mark), Denise; 9 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson. Other survivors include 1 brother, his niece, Nan, and his Uncle Troy. Services will be held Thursday, Feb.16, 2012 at Murray Hill Baptist Church, 4300 Post St. at 11 a.m., followed by interment at 1:30 p.m. in the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd. Reverend Doug Axtell and Reverend Tim Roberts will officiate. Masonic services will be conferred at the church. The family will receive guests and friends an hour before the service at 10 a.m. at the church.
