To the Austin family. My sincere condolences to all of you. Ed and my mother were first cousins and he visited her several years ago in Shenandoah, Va. It was a pleasure for me to meet and talk with him at that time. She was so happy to see him and we had a good visit. I just learned of his death today. May God bless all of you. Dear Family of Ed. Austin,
I may be one of the very few people who knew your Dad from 1942-1944 when we were classmates at Cradock HS. He was supposed to graduate in 1943 but chose to come back in 1944 and that helped him get a scholarship to Duke to play basketball and football. Cradock was a small school at the height of World War II. We had about 52 in our graduating class so we were close. I played football with him. He and another student were our coaches during the week because our formal coach had to work in the Navy Yard and got off to coach us during a game. Under his picture in the Yearbook it says, "I awoke one morning and found myself famous". Then under the Class Prophecy it says,"And in politics is written Eddie Austin's name".
How true these are for your outstanding father and what he accomplished in his life.
May God continue to bless you in the days ahead as you remember your special Dad. Dr. Harley Affeldt, Winston-Salem, NC

Dear Austin Family,
My father and Ed went back many years. They met in 1951 at The University of Florida. My father was a student and Ed was a physical education teacher. They then crossed paths in the mid 1950's in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where Dad was a Army lieutenant and Ed was going through Officer candidate school. They then went to the same law school at UF. They worked together at the County Solicitor's Office as prosecutors. When Ed became Public Defender in 1963, he hired Dad as his chief assistant. When Ed became State Attorney in 1968, Dad became Public Defender. Through it all, as instructor/student, Officer's, prosecutors, Public Defenders, and then as adversaries, they remained true and loyal friends. Upon Dad's death in 2008, Ed was quoted as saying " In the courtroom we were adversaries, but in real life we were best friends, I didn't have a brother except for Lou, He was a good, solid, decent human being and we loved each other." I am certain without a doubt that had Dad been alive at Ed's passing, that he too would have spoken highly of his colleague, adversary, and friend. As Lou's son and a retired JSO officer I had the opportunity to meet and converse with Ed on many occasions throughout life. He was always kind and concerned for my family's well-being. I was deeply saddened to hear of Ed's passing and apologize for this late writing, but I have been away for awhile and just received the news. I pray that God's love will comfort you all at this most difficult time. Your family, as well as the city have suffered a great loss, but Heaven has gained a new angel. God Bless.

I work at a local law office and received a call from a lady who wished to remain anonymous but wanted Mr. Austin's family to know the following:
"Mr. Austin is my hero; in 1968 I called and told him a story and he told me four words that made me the happpiest woman in Jacksonville. I never saw him before or after except on TV and in the paper; I talked to him on the phone that one time only, but he greatly influened me. I always kept up with him whatever he was doing. He was my hero. He was a good man. He listened. I would wish someone could fill his shoes, but I know they can't" MD
This lady told me she does not have a computer, so she could not add this to the guest book but she wanted the family to know how highly she thought of Mr. Austin.

Dear Amy, my husband Chap and I were so very sorry to hear of the passing of your Father, but what an honored time for a most honorable man to be called home to Heaven. I remember several occasions in high school we had our service club functions at your parent's home on Shadowlawn. Your sweet Mother Pat would graciously let us invade her kitchen , as well as prepare snacks for us and oversee that our pot luck gatherings were a success (I seem to especially remember a decadent brownie dessert, compliments of your Mom). Your Father would always come downstairs and introduce himself to each one of us and make us feel right at home, very down to earth for our then state attorney. Your Dad could always be spotted in his trademark silver Mercury Cougar sedan, which he also generously allowed you to use more than once to drive us to our track and cross country meets. Shortly after I moved back here from Boston, I was most pleased to note that your Father had been elected as our Mayor, and always felt even after he left office that somehow he was still able to be a sort of moral compass for our city. God bless you and your entire family during this time, and know that you all are being thought of and prayed for.

To the Austin Family:
In the 31 years that I have lived in Jacksonville, there have been several political and social functions where Mr. Austin has also been in attendance. The man is truly a legend in his time, no doubt! Mr. Austin never left a conversation without a positive note, or words of encouragement. What a phenomenal person! My life has been truly blessed by having been acquainted with such a great person. This city (at one time), was progressing forward in a great way due to the contributions of leadership offered to us by Mayor Austin. May he rest in peace and my thanks to his family for sharing him with us over the year!!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. In my interactions with Ed over thirty years, he was always thoughtful, helpful, professional and caring. Our family remembers his kindness in several specific situations and we were always appreciative of that. The city was indeed fortunate to have a man of his caliber in leadership positions for so many years.

Ed Austin was one of the finest individuals I have ever met. He was a person of intelligence, integrity, and compassion. I was honored to have served in his administration as Deputy Mayor. He would often admonish us to "always do the right thing"....worry about the politics later. It's undeniable that Ed was not the greatest politician but he was a great leader, as his accomplishments and contributions to Jacksonville will attest. His greatest legacy, I believe was as a role model who showed us by his daily action how we should conduct ourselves both in our public and private lives. He instilled great loyalty among his staff because quite simply we loved him.
I have served with many "leaders" over my career in both the public and private sectors but none elicited from me the admiration I held for Ed Austin. I know I am a better person for having known him and I try to emulate him daily in both my public and private life.

I will always be indebted to this fair and honest man for his teaching me what a true public servant is supposed to be for the community in which we live. His wisdom and ethical approach has guided me through many issues, both public and private for over 30 years. He will not be forgotten. For all of us, but especially for his children, may we understand that his soul is now at rest, but he will always remain with us as an inspiration to what constitutes a true friend, a compassionate person and a dedicated public servant.

To the Family of Mr. Austin,
I began working for Mr. Austin in the State Attorney's Office as an intern just out of college in May of 1985. Mr. Austin was the type of person that treated everyone the same. He believed that we all worked on the same team together and it took teamwork to get anything done.
Mr. Austin was a people person. He would come around the office on Fridays to see how people was doing. His door was always opened to his employees and he always had an open ear.
Mr. Austin was a great person, a great boss, but most of all a great friend. I am glad that I had the priviledge of working with him. I always had the utmost respect for him and will continue to have in the future.
May you have peace and comfort during these days of his home going. God Bless You!!! My prayers are with you!!!
