BANNERMAN Velma King Bannerman was the eldest daughter of the late United Methodist Bishop Willis J. King and Mrs. Parmella King. She was an active member of New Bethel AME Church, Rev. George G. Hartsfield, Pastor. She grew up in Atlanta, GA, on the old Gammon Theological Seminary and Clark College Campus and attended the local public schools. After graduating from Clark College and Atlanta University, she began a teaching career until her marriage to the late Rev. J.C. Bannerman, an AME minister from Miami, FL. This union lasted 25 years with the couple serving several churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, before returning to Florida and locating in Jacksonville. Mrs. Bannerman was employed as an English teacher at Edward Waters College in 1964, where she served capably in many roles until her retirement after 16 years. She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter, a co-sponsor of the Edward Waters College Campus Delta Chapter, an ardent worker in her church, AME Ministers Wives, and many other church-related activities. She is survived by her granddaughter Kimberlyn Bannerman, sisters-in-law, Clara and Mary Bannerman, and Johnnie Stirrup, all of Miami, FL; the Fuller and Thomas families of Jacksonville, Mrs. Mildred Williams, of Green Cove Springs, and long-time friend, Mrs. Thelma B. Smith. Mrs. Bannerman passed away on May 27, 2002. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 10:00 AM in her church, with Pastor Hartsfield officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary for visitation from 5 until 8PM Friday, and at the church from 9AM until the hour of services Saturday. The cortege will assemble at the church at 9:30 AM.
