Verna Mae (Allen) Morgan Obituary
MORGAN Verna Mae (Allen) Morgan, 88, of Jacksonville, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Verna Mae Allen was the youngest child of Marcus and Mamie Allen and was born on September 9, 1929, in Lanier County, Georgia. Verna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Jimmy Morgan, and by all of her siblings. After marrying Jimmy, the Morgan's settled in Jacksonville, Florida where they raised their family. Always a vivacious, outgoing and personable woman, Verna worked for many years as a school crossing guard. Mrs. Morgan was a constant in the neighborhood and her vigilance for the safety of children in the Cedar Hills area was visible as she rode her bicycle to her post every day. Verna never met a stranger she didn't like. Greeting countless children on their way to school each day, Verna always had a smile or a word of encouragement for each child, all the while ensuring their safety. Verna was an athletic person from an early age, playing basketball in high school, to teaching swimming, Jazzercise or other community fitness programs over the years. Verna may be best remembered as the swimming teacher for many children over the years. First serving as a swimming instructor for the the YMCA, she eventually built a pool and began teaching children to swim at her home. In more than 50 years of providing swimming lessons, Verna literally taught hundreds of children in Jacksonville how to swim. Also active for many years in her church, and was a member of Murray Hill Baptist Church. Verna leaves behind her son Al (Judy) Morgan, daughter Amy (Larry) Furmon; sisters in law, Hilda (Morgan) Howard and Esther Allen; grandchildren Lauren Hayes Helms, Philip (Lauren) Hayes, and Crystal (Dylan) Galbreath, as well as three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loved ones who will miss her greatly. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 1-2 pm at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL.
