He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Nadia Joseph Akel; Sister Miriam Victor Harb; Daughter Betty Issa, her husband Dr. Raymond Issa and children Alexa and Ryan; Daughter Janet Alley, her husband Sam Alley and children Jessica, Derek and Adrianna; Son Musa Akel, his wife Tammy Akel and children Jordan, Sophia and Grayson; and many loving nieces and nephews. Elias was preceded in death by his parents Musa Hanna and Azizah Akel and his brother Aziz Musa Akel. On June 8, 1927, Elias was born in beloved homeland of Ramallah, Palestine. He enjoyed an active youth there until 1947, when he immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. Elias settled in Jacksonville, Florida, the city that would be his home for the next 63 years. He worked as a traveling salesman for many years and then with his father and brother as a grocer where he affectionately became known as "Pops". Elias will forever be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to faith, hard work, simplicity, honesty, integrity, and, most importantly, his family. Everyone who knew him instantly became touched by his kindness, compassion and selflessness. When describing Elias, one would call him an outdoorsman, an avid gardener, grill master, and legendary storyteller. Elias was loved by many, and he will be very dearly missed by all. Visitation is set for Tuesday, December 21st from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, immediately followed by the Trisagion service officiated by Father Kamal Al-Rahil at St. George's Antiochian Church located at 6300 Bowden Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32216. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 22nd at 10:00 am at St. George's Antiochian Church with interment to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. Condolences may be left at www.hardage-giddenshendricksave.com
