Charles Warren Chuck Howard Obituary
HOWARD Mr. Charles Warren Chuck Howard, age 93, formerly of Fernandina Beach, passed away at the Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville on Thursday evening, February 27, 2014. Born in Greenwood, TX, he was the second oldest of four children born to the late Joe Barnett Howard and Chloe Edith Koiner Howard. He was a graduate of Slidell High School where he played Basketball and earned an athletic scholarship to Decatur Baptist College. While a student at Decatur College, the bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred prompting him to leave school in his Junior year and enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard he was assigned to a Navigational and Radar Testing Unit. During the summer of 1945, while assigned to the Amelia Island Lighthouse, he met a young lady from Callahan, Emily Estelle Jones. Within a few months they became husband and wife. After his honorable discharge later in 1945, the newlyweds moved to Fort Worth, TX. Upon landing his first job as a furniture maker, he began laying the cornerstones for a long career in the Construction Industry. The Howard s came to Fernandina Beach in 1960 and Mr. Howard became well known, sought after and respected as a Building Contractor. Throughout their years here, he built many of the present day homes on the beach front, renovated several Centre Street businesses and built several homes for his family on South Fletcher and the Amelia Island Plantation. In the late 1970s, he and his wife moved to their mountain home in Andrews, NC; returning to Amelia Island within a few years. Foremost in his life was his devotion to the Church of Christ foundation that was instilled in his spirit since his Texan childhood. He was instrumental in the construction and expansion projects of the current church in Fernandina Beach and participated in missionary trips to Jamaica. Mr. Howard was an avid golfer, continued to love the game of basketball and had been a member of Kiwanis International. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan David Howard, who passed away in 1993 and a daughter in law, Claire Naughton Howard. He leaves behind, his wife of 67 years, Emily Jones Howard, their two sons, Charles W. Chuck Howard, Jr., David Howard, all of Jacksonville, FL and a brother, J.B. Howard, Lake Fork, TX. Mr. Howard s family will receive friends on Monday, from 5:00 -7:00 pm at Oxley Heard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at the Church of Christ in Fernandina Beach.
