SAYLER Mr. Samuel Walter Sammy Sayler, Jr., age 95, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Thursday morning, March 13, 2014 at Quality Health Care of Fernandina Beach. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, he was the only child born of German lineage to the late, Samuel W. and Clara Cleo Leininger Sayler, Sr. His father working for the railroad brought Sammy to Fernandina where he spent a great deal of time growing up at his grandparent s house on South 3rd Street. He was educated in the public school system of Fernandina, graduating from Fernandina High School. His father later owned and operated a radio and bicycle shop out of their home, where Sammy worked. In addition to working with his father, as a young boy, he sold the Jacksonville Journal and Grit Newspaper in town as well as delivering telegrams for Western Union. His father later purchased the Florida House where Sammy spent a lot of his childhood and later owned. Mr. Sayler served in the United States Navy during WW II, being deployed to the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. In January of 1941, he married Melba Jones of Fernandina. They made their home in Fernandina where Mr. Sayler worked for Container Corporation of America from where he retired in 1980. He was a member of the local Union during his tenure at the mill and served as a past President. He was a longtime member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where he was a Usher at the early Mass and in past years would tole the bell. Mr. Sayler possessed a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the history of Olde Fernandina and enjoyed the camaraderie associated with the morning McDonalds Coffee Club and breakfasts with fellow retirees.
