BREWINGTON Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Barbara Jean Brewington passed away peacefully on March 29, 2014 after a courageous battle with dementia. Barbara was born on June 22, 1936, the third of five children born to the late Christopher Brewington, Sr. and the late Amelia Brewington. She was educated in Duval County s Public School System and excelled in academics. After graduating from Matthew Gilbert High School in 1953 as Salutatorian, Barbara went on to attend Clark University on an academic scholarship. She majored in Home Economics and Dietetics and graduated with honors in 1957. Upon receiving her bachelor s degree, Barbara held the distinct honor of being selected as one of only a few African American women, in the field of dietetics, to intern at Yale New Haven Medical Hospital. Her career in the field of dietetics and nutrition spanned over 50 years and her many contributions and accomplishments were recognized throughout her career. Barbara was extremely dedicated to her profession and to helping others. She volunteered her time, expertise and experience in assisting countless individuals gain their dietary certifications and licenses. In 2010, Barbara retired from North East Florida State Hospital, in Macclenny, Florida. Barbara was preceded in death by her father and mother, Christopher, Sr. and Amelia Brewington; brothers, Dr. Christopher Brewington (Hortense), Dr. William Brewington; and her sister, Florence Brewington. Barbara is survived by her loving and devoted sister, Gwendolyn Hunter; brother, Phillip Williams; nieces, Michelle Hunter and Monique Demps (Patrick); nephew, Micah Hunter; grand-nieces, Castia Hunter and Kendall Demps; grand-nephews, Michael Wilson, Cameron Demps, Micah Hunter Jr. ; cousins, Henry Miranda, Curtis Miranda (Elizabeth), Ronald Hall, John Scott (Paula), Mascelia Miranda (Archie), Felicia Miranda, Ethel Miranda, Joyce Miranda (Michael), Shenan Smith, Carin Prather (Darwyn), and Rhonda Hall; special friends, Larry and Linda Dumas, Suja, Angela Burch and a number of other relatives and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to the Atria at San Pablo for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Barbara s memory to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. A GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be held Friday, April 4, 2014, at 12:00 noon at Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 Main Street, Gate Six (off of 44th St). Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the NORTHSIDE CHAPEL of MARION GRAHAM MORTUARIES, 1504 Gandy Street, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
