Albert E. Zammit Obituary
ZAMMIT Albert E. Zammit, 87, of Orange Park, FL passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 after an extended illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by his brother, Msgr. Joseph J. Zammit at St. Catherine of Siena, 1649 Kingsley Ave, Orange Park, FL 32073 at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 1, 2014. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL 32073. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice (904) 886-3883 or Covenant House Florida Opening Doors For Homeless Youth (954) 707-2970. Mr. Zammit was born in New York, NY on June 11, 1926 to Salvatore and Josephine Zammit. He was the first child born in America after his family emigrated from Malta. He joined the United States Army in 1944, served in WWII, and retired after more than 18 years of dedicated active duty and reserve service. Mr. Zammit also served as Vice President for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and retired in 1983 following 36 years of service. He was a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and was Chairman of the Council on International Banking June 1977- June, 1978 and June 1980 June 1981. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents and by first wife of 26 years, Genevieve I. Zammit, and by 4 siblings: Marion Grech, Mary Friel, Jane Simmons, and Alfred Zammit. Survivors include his wife of nearly 32 years, Jo Anne P. Zammit; 3 sons: Paul E. (Mary) and Mark A. Zammit, all of Staten Island, NY and Randy Cowart (Beverly) of Havana, FL; 2 siblings: Matilda Fenech and Msgr. Joseph J. Zammit; 5 grandchildren: Paul E. Zammit, Jr., Jennifer and Maria Zammit, Kimberly Shea Greenberg, and Callie Anne Cowart; 1 great-grandchild on-the-way, and numerous nieces and nephews.
