W. Richard "Dick" Maxwell Obituary
MAXWELL W. Richard Maxwell of Jacksonville, FL, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at the age of 93. Dick was born in Troy, OH, on June 20, 1920, attended Ohio Wesleyan University and, following civilian service with the USAF during WWII, graduated from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). He began his working career in the insurance business in Ohio and then moved to Richmond, VA, and joined the VA Chamber of Commerce. From the Chamber, he went to Reynolds Metals Company, where he rose to become VP of Foreign Sales for a Reynolds subsidiary. He then moved to New York and became the President of the national Better Business Bureau and from that job went on to become the President of the national Junior Achievement organization, in which position he had some of the most rewarding experiences of his working career implementing and overseeing the creation of programs designed to teach kids the fundamentals of American capitalism. After retiring from JA in 1982, Dick became a consultant to several local organizations in the Kilmarnock, VA, area as well as taking on globetrotting assignments for JA to Hungary and Russia. He moved to Jacksonville and Cypress Village in 2001. Dick is survived by his son, Doug (Eleanor) Maxwell; daughter, Jean Maxwell; twin granddaughters, Hayden Maxwell and Meredith (Tripp) Glenn; three great grandchildren, Ellie, Anne Maxwell and Robert Glenn; and his dear friend, Sue DeKemper. He was predeceased by his wife, Roberta, and his son, Rob. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Egret Hall at Cypress Village to be followed by a reception.
