Valerie Ann Collins Obituary
COLLINS Valerie Ann Collins passed away on July 10, 2014 at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Rockledge, Florida on September 7, 1957 to Fred C. Collins, Jr. and Ann Mason Collins, she attended local schools in Jacksonville and Orange Park, graduating from St. Johns Country Day School in 1975. She attended the University of South Florida, graduating with a degree in Medical Technology. Her career in blood banking began with summer jobs in the lab of the Jacksonville Blood Bank while still in college. Except for a short break to obtain a Law degree and practice law for a year, her work in blood banking that began in 1978 continued until her last position as President and CEO of the Blood Alliance. She was a past president and board member of the Florida Association of Blood Banks and recently received their Lifetime Achievement Award. She was recently named to the Jacksonville Magazine's list of Most Influential Healthcare Leaders. Although Valerie attended the University of South Florida, she was a dedicated Gator fan and even wore her gator colors while she attended law school at FSU. She always had a love of sailing and was devoted to her several Dachshund dogs that were such a comfort to her. Valerie is survived by her father Fred Collins, her mother Ann Laseter of Maitland, her stepmother Mary Lou Collins, her sister Angela Collins of Orlando, her brother Scot Collins (and daughter Rebecca) of Altamonte Springs, her stepbrothers Doug Laseter, Scott Laseter, Robert Uible (wife Karen and daughters Kristie and Kelsie), and David Uible, her stepsister Cindy Bryson (husband John), and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Blood Alliance or to the Jacksonville Humane Society Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home 4115 Hendricks Ave. Jacksonville, FL 32207.
