HOWARD Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Barbara Gillespie Howard - age 74 of Lenoir City, TN, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 14, 2014. Barbara graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1958 and married her high school sweetheart, Billie Joe (BJ) Howard to begin an extraordinary life as a Navy wife, mom and mammaw. During those Navy years, Barbara made her home with her family on a number of United State Naval Air Bases from NAS Memphis to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Prior to returning to Lenoir City, she and BJ settled in St. Augustine, FL where they lived for over thirty years. After many years service, she retired from Wal-Mart. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir City and Anastasia Baptist Church in St. Augustine, FL. In 1966, while BJ served in the U. S. Navy, Barbara joined the Navy Wives Clubs of America (NWCA), she remained an active member until she passed. She was a life member of NWCA in Jacksonville #86 serving in a number of offices including National President. Barbara worked fervently within NWCA supporting Navy personnel and their families. Through the years, Barbara earned recognition in the final judging for the 1974 Military Wife of the Year, held the prestigious honor of being the 6th Naval District Wife of the Year and the 8th Naval District Wife of the Year. Whether military or civilian, throughout her life she championed any cause where there was a need and she felt she could make a difference. She was an amazing woman, battling a number of catastrophic illnesses through her last years of life in which her love of God, country, family and friends never faltered. Barbara was a devoted wife, mom, sister and friend, and was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond H. and Euba Gillespie; son, Billy Joe, Jr.; sister, Elizabeth Ann Reid; niece, Connie Gale Reid Turner; nephew, Timothy Brian Reid II and brothers-in-law, Larry Buckels and John Howard. Survived by her loving husband of 55 years, B J Howard; sons, Ricky Howard and Marc Howard (Amanda) of Lenoir City; daughters, Donna Lynn Warren (Richard) and Sunshine Howard of St. Augustine, FL; sister, Linda Buckels of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA; mother-in-law, Lily Howard of Oak Ridge; brother-in-law, Tom Howard (Marion); sisters-in-law, Donna Buck (Oran) of Miami, FL and Agnes Howard of Oak Ridge; special daughter-in-law, Tonya Bledsoe of Lenoir City; grandchildren: Marc Howard, Jr., Devvin Howard, Chad Howard, Isabella and Davis Smith, Amber Howard, and Christian Howard; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge Pat Hungate, a very special Angel for her friendship and loving care she gave to Barb during her time of need. They would also like to thank all her other care givers from Covenant Hospice. The family gratefully appreciate flowers and will donate them to Random Acts of Flowers in her name. Memorials may also be made to NWCA National Scholarship Foundation, 1830 W. Schwarz Blvd, The Villages, FL 32159 or Wounded Warrior Project in her name. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18th at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. with Rev. David Latham officiating. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home by 9:30 Saturday morning and proceed to Loudon Co.
