ECKERD Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Angelia Gayle (Gunnell) Eckerd, 49, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Tuesday July 15, 2014 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was the loving mother of Adam Eckerd and the beloved daughter of Carol Heffernan and Raymond Gunnell and step father Roger Douglas. Gayle was adored and much loved by her brother Todd Gunnell and step-siblings Karen & Sean Heffernan. She will be sadly missed by her cousins Grace, Paula, Martin, Tyra, David & Daniel and will be forever remembered by her extended families both in the US and Canada. She is predeceased by her step-father, Robert Heffernan, brother Conrad, Aunts Betty and Vera, Uncle W.A. and cousins, Alvin and Laura. Gayle graduated from Bluevale Collegiate Institute, where she received an honours degree as well as an Ontario Scholars Award. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor's of Art Degree from Western University Ontario. She later received a bilingual certification from George Brown College and a Master of Education from Georgia State University. She began her working career as a bi-lingual flight attendant for an international airline and later taught French for the Fulton County School system. She was an extremely successful business woman. Gayle s passion and commitment to mental healthcare led her back to St. Simon s Island, where she began her healthcare career in 1995 as a Mental Health Technician at Charter By-The-Sea. She continued to be promoted and moved into clinical roles as a teacher and addictions counselor. Through her dedication and strong leadership skills she moved on to become the Quality Improvement/Risk Manager and then the Chief Operating Officer of the St. Simons Island hospital. In 2009, Gayle accepted a CEO position and assumed oversight of 2 facilities in Jacksonville. Her energetic leadership style and decisive nature led to a promotion in 2013 to Group Director/CEO for Riverpoint, Saint Simon s by the Sea and Wekiva Springs hospitals. Gayle's dynamic leadership impacted many who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Gayle was a very fun-loving, vivacious woman who loved life, family, friends and God. She chose to live her life to the fullest, enjoying many activities and attending sporting events with her son, Adam. She was a woman with great integrity, vision and commitment and was an inspiration to many. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter and zest for life will never be forgotten. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Williams Catholic Church, 2300 Frederica Rd. St Simons Island, Ga on Friday, July 25, 2014 @ 11:00 am followed by a reception and the Parish Hall. The Inurnment of Cremains will take place at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, 5775 Frederica Rd., St. Simons Island GA at 1:00 pm. with Reverend Jim Holloway and Monsignor John Kenneally as celebrants. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Gayle s may be made to Northeast Florida Comm.
