BUCHHEIMER John Richard Buchheimer went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2014 after serving 57 years as a Pastor of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He was born on June 14, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan the son of the late Reverend Dr. Edward Buchheimer and Olga Sihler Buchheimer. Survivors include his daughter Lisa Leuthold (Scott), granddaughters Violet and Betty of Jacksonville and sisters Dorothy Nelson of Spring Lake, Michigan, and Mary Hudson (Torn) of Hudson, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Betty, his mother and father, his brother Torn who was serving as Vicar of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Miami Shores, Florida at the time of his death, and brother-in-law John Nelson. Pastor Buchheimer is a direct descendant of William Sihler, his great grandfather, who in 1847 was one of 14 Lutheran Pastors who began the Missouri Synod. He comes from a long line of Missouri Synod Pastors, his grandfather, Rev. Dr. Louis B. Buchheimer was pastor of Our Redeemer in St. Louis, Missouri and his uncle Paul was pastor in Saratoga Springs, New York, his uncle Louis was pastor in Chinatown where he served a Chinese congregation. His father Rev. Dr. Edward Buchheimer was pastor of Our Saviour in Detroit, Michigan for 60 years. Pastor John began preparation for the ministry at Pre-Theological High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana which both his father and grandfather had attended Upon graduation from Concordia in Ft. Wayne, he attended Valparaiso University where he was selected to the Valparaiso Hall of Fame in football. He continued his education at Concordia Seminary and graduated in 1955 to begin his parish ministry. He was ordained in 1955 in Detroit by his father, Edward. He served at his first church in Eldorado, Arkansas. He also served as first pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Port Huron, Ml. He then went to Our Saviour in Detroit to serve with his father for 10 years. While in Detroit he obtained is Master's in Education at Wayne State University. In 1969 Pastor Buchheimer came to Jacksonville Beach to serve as pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served for 34 years until his retirement in 2003. After retiring from Bethlehem he served as pastor at Good Shepherd in Starke until July, 2012. During his ministry at Bethlehem Pastor Buchheimer aided in the development of three daughter congregations, Christ Our Savior in St. Augustine, Grace Lutheran in Jacksonville and Good Shepherd in Starke. Pastor Buchheimer loved His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and all of the people the Lord permitted him to serve during his ministry. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville Beach, Florida and/or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Starke, Florida. A visitation will be held this Tuesday, July 29, 2014 from 9-11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church located 1423 8th Avenue North, Jacksonville, FL 32250. Reverend Dana Brones will be officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Beaches Chapel (904)249-2374.
