WHELCHEL Carl Davis Whelchel III, M.D., F.A.C.S, age 73, passed away Saturday August 23, 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on April 8, 1941 in Cordele, Georgia to Carl D. Whelchel Jr. and Wynelle Whelchel. Davis served as a Major in the US Army and then practiced General Surgery at Memorial Hospital for 37 years. While working at Memorial Hospital, Davis served as chairman of the Department of Surgery, held various positions including President of the Medical Staff and was honored with being elected Physician of the Year. Davis was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as President of the Jacksonville chapter. Davis also served on the Board of Directors for the Duval County Medical Society. Among Davis other achievements was being chosen to travel to Jacksonville s sister city of Murmansk, Russia to teach laparoscopic surgery to Russian physicians and he returned 15 times to work with his Russian colleagues. Davis also served multiple times in Haiti with the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation. Davis was a member of the Asbury Class of Southside United Methodist Church and in his spare time he enjoyed boating, hiking, flying and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Muriel; sister Patricia Bolin (Marion); sister Glenda Darley; brother Homer Whelchel (Barbara); son Carl. D. Whelchel IV (Elizabeth); daughter Amanda Krug (Aaron) and three granddaughters (Grace and Isabel Whelchel, Samantha Krug). A Memorial Service will be held 4:30 p.m. Thursday August 28, 2014 at Southside United Methodist Church with a reception to follow. Memorials in Davis name may be made to: Southside United Methodist Church, St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
