James Louden Borland

BORLAND
Dr. James Louden Borland, Jr. died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on January 30, 2018. Jim was born on November 20, 1932 in Durham, North Carolina to his parents Dr. James Louden Borland, Sr. and Kathleen Scott Randolph. His early years were spent in Ocala, FL. In 1946 he moved to Jacksonville to live with his father and graduated from the Bolles School in 1950. He went on to the University of Florida, graduating in 1954 with a B.S. degree. While at Florida, he was elected to The Florida Blue Key Honor Society, the Letterman's Association, and the All American Swimming Team for 3 meter Diving, 1954. In 1972, he was inducted into the Florida University Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1958. During his senior year, he obtained a clinical clerkship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. His internship(1958-1959) was spent at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Osler Medical Service, First Year Assistant Resident (1959-1960) at Vanderbilt University Hospital, and Second Year Assistant Resident(1960-1961) at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Osler Medical Service. He continued his education at Duke University Medical Center in a Gastroenterology Fellowship, 1961-1963. He spent the next two years at the Naval Air Station in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. During those 2 years, he spent time moonlighting in his father's Gastroenterology practice, which he joined in 1965. Also in 1965, he received his certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
He was actively involved with many medical organizations and held many positions. He was on the Editorial Board of Gastroenterology; Deans Advisory Committee, University of Florida School of Medicine; National Digestive Diseases Advisory Board; American College of Physicians-Governor for Florida, Executive Committee, Board of Governors, Board of Regents, and Treasurer; American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy-Board of Directors, Treasurer, and President; American Gastroenterological Association-Board of Directors, and Treasurer; American Medical Association, Council on Medical Education-Chairman, and Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education-Chairman; American Digestive Health Foundation-Board of Directors and Treasurer; American College of Gastroenterology-Board of Directors; Florida Society of Internal Medicine-President; Florida Gastroenterologic Society-President; Jacksonville Hospital Education Program-President; Duval County Medical Society-President; St. Luke's Hospital, Jacksonville-President of Medical Staff; St. Vincent's Hospital, chief of Gastroenterology; Foundation for Medical Care in Duval County-President; Florida Medical Association. He authored several publications and was an active teacher at the University of Florida Health Science Center as well as teaching medical students and residents in his practice and in his community.
In 1972, The American Society of Internal Medicine awarded him the Young Internist of the Year award. He was awarded an Honorary Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Florida School of Medicine, 1979-2016; Governor of the Year, American College of Physicians, 1972; Laureate Award, Florida Chapter, American College of Physicians, 1992; Distinguished Service Award, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 1996; Distinguished Clinician Award, American Gastroenterological Society, 1996; Charles Donegan Award for Distinguished Service, Florida Chapter, American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine, 1998; Honorary Member, Sociadal Venezuala De Medicina Interna, 1998; Master, American College of Physicians, 2000; Alfred Stengal Memorial Award, American College of Physicians, 2001; James L. Borland. Sr. Memorial Award, Florida Gastroenterological Society, 2001; Fellow, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 2004; Master of the House, Flag Newsletter, Veterans Affairs, 2000; Performance Award, Department of Veterans Affairs, 2005; and Exemplary Service Award, Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington, D.C. , 2010.
Jim was a strong believer of stewardship and gave his time to many local organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of Florida, Florida Health Data Corporation as President, Duval Chapter of The American Cancer Society, First Guaranty Bank and Trust Company on the Board of Directors, The Rotary Club of Jacksonville as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow, Jacksonville Community Council Board of Directors, Florida Yacht Club Board of Directors, October Club as President, The Bolles School Board of Directors, and Florida Bar Grievance Committee.
He maintained a private practice of Gastroenterology with the Borland Clinic for Digestive Diseases and the Borland-Groover Clinic from 1965 to 1998. In 1999, he joined the Veterans Health Administration as Chief Medical Officer, Jacksonville Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic until 2002. From 2001 to 2011, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Outpatient Clinics for North Florida and South Georgia Veterans Administration Health Systems. He provided overall management of nine outpatient clinics located in Jacksonville, Daytona, Tallahassee, Valdosta, Ocala, Lecanto, Leesburg, St. Augustine, the villages and oversight of the Telehealth Program. During this time he managed a workforce of about 700 clinical, support and administrative employees. He was actively involved in opening more new outpatient clinics, located in Marianna, St. Marys, Palatka, Waycross, The Villages in Summerfield, FL and Perry, Florida. He retired for the second time on December 31, 2010.
During the summer vacations from college and medical school, Jim was a wrangler and pack trip leader at the Arnold Western Ranch in Gold Hill, Colorado. He did this for nine summers and developed a long lasting love affair with Colorado and the adjacent western states.
Jim met the love of his life, Lee-Margaret Vogel, at Johns Hopkins Hospital when they were both students. During his second year of Assistant Residency at Hopkins in 1960, their paths crossed again and as he said, "We were able to work out a name change before the end of the year, and our partnership has been remarkable for me ever since". Together they continued their love affair with Colorado by skiing once or twice a year and for 20-25 years working as a "ranch hand" on Mr. A.D. Davis' ranch where Jim's specialty was castrating bull calves. In 1995 they became certified open water scuba divers and by 2008 had logged over 265 dives in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They have traveled the world for both medical organizations and pleasure.
Jim was predeceased by his son, Christopher Vogel Borland; sisters Kathleen Borland Buckman, Donia Lowe, and Alice Lowe Edney; and brother Edwin Lawrence Lowe. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lee-Margaret; son James Louden Borland, III(Sandy); daughter Donia Elisabeth Borland; brothers Reverend Thomas P. Borland(Sally) and Craig Lowe; sister Susan Borland Huston; daughter-in-law, Marie Attaway Borland, mother of his only grandson Maximilian Vogel Borland; and several extended family members, nieces and nephews.
Jim was called the "Consummate Physician" by his peers. He believed in the definition of medicine as professed by William Osler, a Johns Hopkins founding physician, "The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head." He was a gentle man and a loving husband and father. Although he was deeply involved with his medical life, he always found time for his family. His kindness, smile and gentle being will be missed.
