Louis Wolfson Obituary

WOLFSON Financier, philanthropist, and sportsman, Louis E. Wolfson, passed away on December 30, 2007, at home one month before his 96th birthday. Wolfson was the son of Eastern European Immigrants, Morris D. and Sarah Goldberg Wolfson, who after living for brief periods in Baltimore, MD and St. Louis, MO, settled in Jacksonville, FL. It was there that the Wolfson name would become synonymous with humanitarianism and major philanthropies in areas as diverse as healthcare, poverty, civil rights, education, and athletics. Numerous structures in Jacksonville today are living testaments to the charitable work of Lou Wolfson and his family. Wolfson attended the University of Georgia on a football scholarship but his promising athletic career and desire to play football were cut short by a shoulder injury. He went to work at his father's scrap metal yard in Jacksonville and helped build a successful family business that carved a niche for himself as a true visionary in the history of American business. From the modest Florida Pipe and Supply, Wolfson acquired shipyards in Jacksonville and Tampa, successfully took over the D.C. Transit System in the Nation's capital, battled for control of mail order giant, Montgomery Ward, and eventually became the head of the country's first corporate conglomerate, Merritt Chapman and Scott, the construction giant responsible for building bridges, tunnels, ships, and dams throughout the world. In a 1955 New York Times article entitled "Today's Giants in Finance," Wolfson was listed along with such legendary business figures as H.L. Hunt and Howard Hughes. In addition to being the family patriarch, Wolfson's counsel was sought by corporate leaders, political figures and famous celebrities. He was very supportive of George Romney's entry into the compact car production vis a vis American Motors manufacture of the first compact car in the U.S. He was a consultant to Universal Marion Corporation, which through its subsidiary, Marion Power Shovel, manufactured the still- utilized NASA crawler shuttle transporter. And, in 1968 Universal Marion Corporation co-financed the production of Mel Brooks' Oscar- winning first motion picture, "The Producers", later to become the most success full play in Broadway history. During the late 1960's , Wolfson fought constant battles with the federal government when he was convicted of selling unregistered securities in what was the first criminal prosecution of its kind at that time. Wolfson maintained his innocence over the years; claimed to be the victim of selective prosecution; and tried unsuccessfully through the courts to overturn his conviction. After serving 10 months in a minimum security facility, Wolfson became an outspoken critic of the American penal system and an ardent proponent of meaningful reforms. During this period, Wolfson also returned to a lifelong passion, thoroughbred racing and breeding. Wolfson's Harbor View Farm, established in 1959, was among the country's leading racing and breeding operations throughout the 1960's. But it was during the 1970's that Wolfson and his homebred champion, AFFIRMED, reached the pinnacle of the sport by capturing the coveted Triple Crown in 1978. Affirmed was twice voted Horse of the Year (1978, 1979) and went on to become a successful sire of champions, the most notable of which was twice champion turf mare, Flawlessly. Affirmed's Triple Crown feat has not been replicated for the past 29 years. Wolfson is predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Florence Monsky Wolfson. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patrice Jacobs Wolfson, the daughter of the legendary horseman, Hirsch Jacobs; daughter; Marcia; sons Steve, Gary, and Marty; grandchildren Risa, Stephen, Fara, Jill, Alan, Caeli, Gregory, Jonathan and Justin; great-grandchildren Alexa, Libi, Pablo, Silvio and Ronit; and brothers, Cecil, Saul and Nathan. Family members and close friends say that Lois E. Wolfson never lost sight of his modest roots and was motivated by a desire to give back something meaningful to the country that provided opportunity for him and his parents. He will best be remembered by those who knew him for his brilliant mind, business acumen, extraordinary work ethic, great compassion, major philanthropies, and unparalleled humanitarianism. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Congregation Ahaveth Chesed (The Temple), 8727 San Jose Boulevard, with Rabbi Michael Matuson officiating and interment following in Temple Cemetery (in Evergreen Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Baptist Wolfson's Children's Hospital, 800 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32207; or the Louis E. and Patricia J. Wolfson Foundation, P.O. Box 4, Jacksonville, FL 32201. Arrangements are by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

To the Family of Louie Wolfson,
I grew up in Miami, Florida hearing stories of "Louie Wolfson" who my Dad told us about many times. My father, William "Vernon" Braddock (Sept. 8,1910 - Apr 13, 1994) grew up in Jacksonville with the man he called "Louie Wolfson" and spoke of him often with very fond memories. I always think of Mr. Wolfson, especially at this time of year and I'm so sorry to hear he has passed. How wonderful that you had him for so many years and I'm sure your wonderful memories of him will comfort you all. Be it known that I'm sure each year as I watch the horse races leading up to the Belmont Stakes, I will always think of Louie Wolfson, my father's dear friend that he never forgot. May the Peace of God be your constant companion.
P. S. As you can see, I am named after my father.

"How do I count the ways?" There are not enough fingers and toes!
Mr. Wolfson means so much to my family and myself. If Stefan, Billie and Stefanie were alive; they would tell the good your husband and father did. No light has ever shown our side. His great thoughts and deeds were given beyond all which has been written. In the weeks ahead, I will write you outside the guest book. Telling our side of his legacy. My plan is to mail a letter to the Ormand Beach home address. Scarlett joins me in our condolences to Patrice, Gary, Steve and Marty. We wish the entire family, along with all who loved & respected Mr. Wolfson to know more about the man you know so well.

My deepest sympathy to Patrice, Marcia, Steve, Gary and Marty. I knew your dear husband and father during some of his difficult days and he always remained a gentleman. He and his darling Patrice, introduced my late husband, Bill, and I to many of life's great joys - and taught us a lot, also. What a wonderful man and life! May he rest in peace and may the angels comfort all of you.

I did not get the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wolfson, however I do work for Baptist Medical Center and was born and raised around the hospital. I am very thankful that we have such a beautiful and caring Children's Hospital it would not have been that way if it were not for Mr. Wolfson. Everyone enjoys coming to our hospital and being treated very well. Mr. Wolfson will be missed by many and will always be remembered by many more. He is in a better place that will keep him close and he will be able to watch over everyone.

I was raised on Harbor View Farms in Fellowship Florida, owned by Mr. Wolfson, I married and left there in 1974 but have the fondest memories of the farm, the people who worked there and the generosity that was shown to my father (Edgar McCullough)by Mr. Wolfson and his family. Thank you for the fond memories of growing up around horse racing.

I will always remember my Uncle Lou as a charismatic and compassionate man who cared deeply about his family, and was profoundly committed to bettering the human condition through his intellectual courage, tireless work ethic, and tremendous generosity.

The passion, brilliance, integrity, and energy he brought to most everything he did throughout his incredible life is truly inspirational, and will be cherished in memory by many for countless years to come.

Heartfelt condolences to his wife Patrice and to his sons, Steve, Gary and Marty and to his daughter Marcia.

Dear Patrice,
We were saddened to learn of Mr. Wolfson's passing.
Lou and Laz, with Affirmed, created unforgettable moments in racing history, and they leave us with wonderful memories of those happy and thrilling days.
These memories can help us to find comfort, and be thankful, to have shared with them, and to have learned from them, that to achieve victory and greatness in life, one has to fight courageously to the end, always.
Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

Dear Marcia,

I haven't seen you since we graduated from Beach High in '55, but I remember some good times that we had together at pajama parties, luncheons, etc. I even met my late husband, Harry Bernard, at one of your "boy-girl" parties on North Bay Road. I've missed seeing you at our reunions. Maybe we can meet again at a future time when you're down here.

Your father was always an exemplary man and I know how much you'll miss him. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Fondly,

Carole

My deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to Patrice Wolfson, my cousins, Marcia, Steve, Gary, and Marty, as well as the whole Wolfson family. I remember my uncle as being one of the toughest but most incredibly generous men ever, who was bothered by a lot of the injustices in our society and did his best to fight them. His many deeds of generosity in the Jacksonville, the Miami area, and other places surely overshadow the controversy that dogged him for much of his successful life. My immediate family can never repay him for all he did after the untimely death of my father in 1959. May he rest peacefully and may his family gently embrace fond memories and heal in time.
