Lester Charles Schwandt Obituary
SCHWANDT Today this world is missing one of its greatest - a loving and inspiring man revered by all. Lester Charles Schwandt left us to be with his Lord on November 2, 2009. He was born June 12, 1928 in McLean County, ND, to William E. and Helen E. (Liebel) Schwandt. He was reared and educated in Underwood, ND and upon graduation in 1946 he started his well traveled construction career. He worked as a superintendant on major projects including Garrison Dam in North Dakota and a US Air Base in Greenland. He traveled across the United States from Montana to New Jersey, working his way south through Alabama and into Florida where he found the one and only love of his life, Nilla Duffield, in Dania Beach, Florida. They married August 7, 1965, and made their home in Jacksonville, Florida. Lester was most known for his love of God's Church and passion for family. He and Nilla opened their home and hearts to everyone. They gave whatever they could to help those in need. They mentored, provided education and more importantly, a loving and nurturing home to many. To them being family went beyond blood. Lester was humble and avoided the spotlight. His accomplishments in life and all he did were for others. He did what he thought was the right thing for the right reasons and he avoided recognition or praise. Even so, as a member of the Knights of Columbus Lester was recognized as Jacksonville's 2006 Knight of the Year and in 2007 he and Nilla were Jacksonville's Knights of Columbus Family of the Year. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Nilla, Jacksonville; sisters, Kay Schwandt, Rosmary Schwandt, and Shirley Fetch, all of Bismarck, ND; son, Charlie (Cecily) Schwandt; grandson, Will Schwandt; Thomas Bird family, Kenny Sapp family and Angel Schaffer family, all of Jacksonville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lester was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ernest Schwandt. The viewing and visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday, November 5 at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave., Jacksonville, with a Rosary Service being held at 6 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, November 6 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4920 Brentwood Ave., Jacksonville, with Fr. Callistus Onwere, Celebrant. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, Lester would appreciate a donation to the Knights of Columbus. Please Sign the Guestbook @
