J. Thomas Ryan Obituary
RYAN J. Thomas Ryan, 82, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, passed away December 28, 2010. He was born in New York City to Margaret and Timothy Ryan on May 14, 1928. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Mark Ryan (Laurie; grandchildren, Colin, Kyle and Kelly) of Hingham, MA; son, James Ryan of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Christine Werbela Ryan (grandchild, Kimberly A. Ryan) of Cherry Hill, NJ and NYC; Nancy McDonald (Steven; grandson, Michael) of Irvington and Sag Harbor, NY; Patrice Lott (Edwin) of Glen Cove, NY; and numerous Frain family member cousins. Tom graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School, Brooklyn, NY, and Fordham University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1952. While at Fordham, he was President of his class and started on the Varsity swimming and football team which had an assistant coach at that time named Vince Lombardi. Tom served in the U.S. Army from 1952 -1954 at Fort Jackson, SC in the 8th Infantry and 101st Division where he taught Map Reading and Military Justice and obtained the Rank of Sergeant. Tom and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1989 from Convent Station, NJ upon his retirement from McGraw-Hill Inc. where he had a long and distinguished 35 year career beginning as a Sales Trainee with the F.W. Dodge Corporation in 1954. In 1961 McGraw-Hill purchased F.W. Dodge. Career advancements included regional management assignments in New England and Los Angeles. In 1968, Tom was promoted and moved to New York as Vice- President of Sales and in 1972 became Vice-President of Operations. In 1983, Tom assumed the title of Executive Vice-President, Construction Information Group and in 1985 Tom was elevated to Executive Vice- President, Marketing/International until he retired in 1988. Tom and Marilyn were proud members of Sawgrass Country Club and Spring Brook Country Club, Morristown, NJ where they both enjoyed golf, held various committee positions, and made lasting and lifelong friendships. Tom was also a member of the University Club of New York and the American Legion Palm Valley Post 233. Tom and Marilyn were faithful parishioners of our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Ponte Vedra Beach. Tom will be remembered as a loving husband to his wife of 58 years, Marilyn A. (Hopkins), and as a dedicated son, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend to many. A man of enormous skills, an individual of conviction in principles, character, obligation to family, compassion, leadership, professionalism and the highest of moral and ethical standards and values, J. Thomas Ryan leaves a legacy of excellence his life represented. The family wishes to thank the Doctors, Rev. Charles Padathuruthy, and particularly the Nurses of St. Luke's (2004) and Mayo Clinic (2010 Critical Care Unit) and the McGraw Hospice for their care of Tom and support given to the family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 2 pm in Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Ponte Vedra Beach. A gathering of friends and family will take place on Friday January 14th in Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home from 7 to 9 pm.
