Obituary Condolences

KNOWLES James Knowles August 28th, 1927 - May 5th, 2011 James Knowles was born in Puerto Padre, Cuba in 1927 to Scottish parents Archibald James Knowles and Lily Doake. Raised in Scotland, he graduated at twenty one from medical school in Aberdeen and met his English wife of 59 years, Betty Pamela Harris, while both were interns in London. After 10 years as a British Army surgeon, Jim emigrated to Canada with Betty and children Alison, James and Patricia; their fourth child, Roderick, was born shortly afterward. In Aurora, Ontario, Jim and Betty ran a thriving medical practice until their retirement in 1989. Jim was also Chief of General Practice at the York County Hospital (now Southlake Regional Health Centre) in Newmarket for several years. Jim was a man of diverse interests and many accomplishments. Growing up in Scotland he enjoyed hill- walking and cycling, and swam competitively for his university. A passionate musician all his life, he played orchestral and chamber music on the violin and viola. He loved travelling, touring with his family all over North America. He was an excellent photographer, a voracious reader, a deft cartoonist, a beguiling poker player, a skilled cabinet-maker, an intrepid boater who never let a few shoals deter him, and a charming but shrewd businessman with a keen eye for value. A gracious host who was always interested in people, he would engage anyone in conversation, preferably over a jug of gin martinis. Betty and Jim's New Year's Eve parties were famous for their large attendance and Scottish dancing. James' biggest accomplishment however was the love and respect he engendered in those who knew him. They appreciated him for his truly fine intellect, his humanity, his toughness in adversity, and his dry humour. James will be especially missed by his wife, four children, and ten grandchildren. A memorial service for James Knowles shall be held on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 591 St. Vincent Street, Meaford, Ontario. Reception to follow.
