Bobby Kirkland Obituary
KIRKLAND Colonel Bobby J. Kirkland, U.S. Air Force, retired, passed away August 20, 2011. He was born on January 16, 1931 in Vero Beach, Florida, the son of Myrtice Kirkland Allen and the stepson of J. Lloyd Allen. He enlisted in the Air Force in September 1948 upon graduating from high school. Accepted into the aviation cadet program, he was commissioned in May 1954 and received his navigator wings in June. He served his entire career as a member of the Strategic Air Command and flew in KC-97, B-47, and B-52 aircraft, accumulating a total of more than 4,000 hours of flying time. His service also included a tour in the Atlas missile system, and during the Vietnam Era, he served in Thailand and Guam. He retired from the Air Force in 1978 with 30 years of service. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and an MBA from the University of West Florida at Panama City. Moving to Panama City upon retirement, he became a member of Flotilla 16 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving two terms as commander. He also served as the Director of the Retired Activities Office at Tyndall AFB, Florida. Surviving are his wife, Yolanda Galvan Kirkland; children, Mary Carol Hook and husband Michael, son, Robert James Kirkland and wife Angela, John Allen Kirkland and wife Diane; grandchildren, Adam Hook and wife Nichole, Katherine Jacobsen and husband Eric, Sara Hook, Alexandra, Matthew, and Andrew Kirkland and Chloe Kirkland, and soon to appear, his first great grandchild. Family will receive friends TODAY, August 22, 2011 from 6-8pm at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, with mass to be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 10am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, Florida.
