POPE Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com James W. Pope, 66, lifelong resident of Jacksonville, passed away November 23, 2011. An active lieutenant with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office, James proudly served his community with JSO for 38 years. James was born in Jacksonville, August 2, 1945, to the late Esther Shackelford-Pope and William James Pope. He was preceded in death by one sister, Penelope Pope-Bonner and is survived by nephew, Christopher L. Thalman. James joined the United States Marine Corps in December 1964, where he earned many recognitions, including the Purple Heart Award. James graduated from Florida Junior College in 1970. James had a serious appreciation of American History and great respect of the United States Military. He extensively researched his own family history, chronicling his lineage back to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Geneology was a great passion of his and he eagerly helped fellow officers with their family researches. James was also an avid coin collector. Dedicated to his community, he participated in various community services and was a member of the American Legion, Post 137. Lt. Pope was loved and respected by his Sheriff's Office family and will be deeply missed. He was intensely loyal to his colleagues, who viewed him as a leader, advisor, companion and dear friend.
