John Hotes Obituary

HOTES John Lawrence Hotes, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2011 at Clyde Lassen Veterans Home in St Augustine. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruthie Hotes, who passed away just a few months ago. He is survived by his daughter Jeanne Kennedy (Bob), son John Richey Hotes (Renee); grandchildren Patrick, Taylor, John Richard and Jessica and his brother Charlie Hotes. He was born in Boise, Idaho on July 3, 1923. He grew up in Alder, Washington on the family's farm and went to a one room schoolhouse. He skipped two grades and entered the University of Washington at the age of 16, where he was accepted into the NROTC program. He started his naval career in the submarine service, transitioning to surface warfare. In 1948, he earned his wings in Pensacola and spent the rest of his career in Naval Aviation flying Corsairs and Banshees off of aircraft carriers. He retired as a Commander in 1967 and then went on to teach math at Fletcher High School. In both his military service and his teaching career, he motivated and inspired those around him to achieve their potential. Like his wife, he had a passion for tennis and could be found on the courts every day at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Tuesday, December 20th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

We are going to miss John and Ruth. They were great neighbors. It's comforting knowing they both lived long, full lives and were surrounded by their loved ones at the end.
