HARKINS LtCDR (Retired) Billy Miles Harkins passed peacefully in his home on Monday, February 20, 2012 surrounded by family and loved ones after a short battle with cancer. Billy was born February 4th, 1923 to James Belton and Mary Inez Harkins in Birmingham, Alabama. He joined the Navy in 1940 and went through the ranks to retire as a Lt. Cdr. Prior to ending his 30 year career in 1970, Billy sailed around the world as an Aviation Ordinanceman and served on 7 aircraft carriers, but his heart belonged to the USS Tarawa. Predeceased by his 1st wife of 58 years Billie Harkins, Son Arno, and Brother James B. Harkins Jr. Survived by his love, best friend, and partner in fun Ruth A. Harkins, Daughter Sandra (Scott), 3 Grandsons Alan, Christopher, and Brian. 4 Stepchildren he loved as his own James (Gene), Peter (Pat), Cheryl (Joe), Susan (Bob). He will be remembered by everyone he met, as he never met a stranger. Billy was a long time resident of Jacksonville, Fl, a highly regarded citizen of the community, and an Eagle Scout. As a 63 year Mason, he was also a ranking member of the Morocco Shrine Temple, Wesconett Lodge, and Clay County Shrine Club, making 75 trips to transport crippled children to the Tampa Burn Unit. VFW Post 7909 lifetime member, American Legion Post 137, and Fleet Reserve. In any spare time, you could find Billy on the golf course looking for his next hole in one. Funeral services with full Military honors will be held on Saturday, Feb 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL. Family and friends invited to visit on Friday, Feb 24 from 5:00 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shriners Childrens Hospital or Community Hospice.
