Mary Nixon Obituary
NIXON Mary Hill Nixon, retired RN, World War II veteran, quilter and beloved mother passed away on May 10, 2012, in Clearlake, CA at the age of 88 years. Mary was born in Thomasville, AL but spent the latter part of her childhood in Sparks, GA where she graduated from high school. Her poor farming family scraped together enough money to send her to nursing school at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She later used these skills to enter the U.S. Army and held the rank of lieutenant. While stationed in the Panama Canal Zone she met her future husband, Tom Nixon, who was working civil service as a sheet metal smith for the government. They eventually married and settled down in Jacksonville, FL. Mary continued her nursing career working for several doctors in private practice as well as for several hospitals in the Jacksonville area, including Riverside Hospital, Naval Air Station Jacksonville and finally St. Vincent s Hospital where she retired in 1986 but continued to volunteer for the hospital s nurses auxiliary. She was an avid seamstress and quilter winning numerous awards over the years. Mary loved working in her yard and completing projects around the house with her husband right up until his death in 1999. Several years later she relocated to Kelseyville, CA to live with her oldest son and daughterin-law, Tom and Val Nixon, and to be closer to her grandchildren. Increasing problems associated with Parkinson s Disease and the need for additional assistance led Mary and her family to seek the loving services of Orchard Park Assisted Living and Memory Care in Clearlake, CA. She was warmly integrated into the Orchard Park family where she developed many new friendships and felt the love and care of this special place for which her family will be forever grateful. The family also wishes to send our sincere thanks to Lake County Hospice for all of their comfort and help through our mother s last few months. Mary is survived by her two sons, David (Suzanne) Nixon of Jacksonville Beach, FL and Tom (Val) Nixon of Kelseyville, CA; four grandchildren, Matt Nixon of San Diego, Lauren Nixon of Felton, CA, Monica (Kurt) Gerhardt and Jeff (Tiffany) Haddock both from Jacksonville, FL; and eight great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held later this year in Jacksonville Beach, FL. Mary s remains will lie next to her deceased husband at Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Orange Park, FL.
