Obituary Condolences

HOLLIS Jane Green Hollis, died on Monday, February 18 due to complications from pneumonia and Lewy Body Dementia. Martha Jane Green was born to the late Bertha Snyder Green and Hix Howard Green on January 29, 1932 in Charlotte, NC. The family later moved to Atlanta where Jane graduated from E. Rivers Elementary School and Washington Seminary. Along with a few, close friends from Atlanta, she attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, MA and then The University of Alabama. Upon her return to Atlanta, Jane worked for the Atlanta Journal as a staff writer. Jane married Samuel Brinson Hollis, of Memphis, TN, on July 27, 1957 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta and moved to Memphis. In 2004, she and Sam moved to Atlanta to be closer to family, friends and their retirement home in Highlands, NC. Highlands was always a great source of pleasure for Jane, especially since she and Sam met there as teenagers, 11 years prior to their marriage. Jane was first and foremost a loving wife and mother, devoting her life to the happiness and well being of her family. She loved art and gardening and returned to school in the mid 1980's at the Memphis College of Arts. She was a member of the Memphis Garden Club, the Memphis Junior League and the Colonial Dames. Later in her life, Jane returned to writing as Mid-South editor for Southern Accents. She was responsible for identifying homes to be included in the magazine, coordinating the photo shoots and writing the articles. She loved working with the designers and homeowners to feature the beautiful home places in the Mid-South region. She and Sam loved to travel and saw many parts of the world together, including numerous trips to France and England, a trip to Egypt and Greece, and a trip to China shortly after travel restrictions were lifted in the 1980's. Some of her fondest memories were of family trips together and spending time on the St. John's River in Green Cove Springs, near Jacksonville, FL. Jane is survived by her husband, Samuel Brinson Hollis, and their three children: Suzanne Hollis Apple, Samuel Brinson Hollis, Jr. (Dabney) both of Atlanta and Lee Maxwell Hollis (Katie) of Birmingham, AL. She is also survived by her brother, Hix Howard Green, Jr., and his wife, Beverly, by her five grandchildren of Atlanta and Birmingham and six nephews of Atlanta, Washington, DC, Seattle, WA and Paris, France. There will be a memorial service held at St. Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, February 21 at 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23 at Holy Communion Church, Memphis, TN, followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery.
