GODBOLD Please Sign the Guestbook @ Doris Jean Godbold Jean Godbold, loving wife, caring mother and thoughtful friend to so many, passed away peacefully at Community Hospice in the early morning hours on Friday March 22, 2013. She was 81 years old and had been in ill health since suffering a stroke several months ago. Jean was married to Jake M. Godbold, former mayor of Jacksonville, for 57 years. At a recent gathering of close friends and staff members to celebrate his 80th birthday, Jake emotionally told the crowd of caring for Jean during her illness, calling her, the love of my life. If there was ever a saint it was mother, said Ben Godbold, her only child. She had a heart of gold. Jean was born in Hodge, La. on June 13, 1931 and moved to Jacksonville with her parents, Louise and Gordon, Jenkins, at age 9. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, where she met Jake, her future husband, also a Jackson graduate. Prior to becoming secretary-treasurer of Gateway Chemicals, Inc., a local company owned jointly by Jake and Jean, she retired after 19 years from Southern Bell. In addition to Jake and Ben, Jean is survived by two granddaughters, Matilda and Morgan Godbold; a sister, Melba Alford of Penny Farms, and a brother, Danny Jenkins, of Knoxville, TN. Services will be held Wednesday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. in The Wesley Fellowship at 44th and Pearl. Internment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Main Street Chapel. Please visit to leave messages of sympathy.
