GENE PULLEN Obituary
PULLEN Gene Albert Pullen departed this life on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at McGraw Hospice of Jacksonville, Florida. Gene was born on February 22, 1939 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late Clyde and Adelle Cole Pullen. Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Shine Pullen and sister, June Pullen Strong, and his former wife, Janice Mansfield Davis. Gene leaves to honor his memory his sister, Diane Pullen Blevins of Huntington, West Virginia, his daughter, Melissa Pullen McBurney and grandson Jason of Pensacola, Florida, his son Todd Pullen, wife Paige, and grandson Gabriel of Charlottesville, Virginia; his former wife Carol Pullen and son Madison Pullen of Jacksonville, Florida; his life partner, Sandy Gramke, her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Jeremy McDonald and granddaughters Isabelle and Priscilla of Jacksonville, Florida. Gene had a unique zest for life and loved putting a smile on the face of anyone he loved or knew as a friend. He wanted all to find their happiness in life. Gene began his career as a sports writer in 1961 for the Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Mississippi. Later he joined the News Journal in Pensacola, Florida. Gene ultimately moved and settled in 1967 with the Times Union in Jacksonville, Florida as a sports editor. Geno was well known and loved in the Jacksonville sports community for years with the Times Union through his retirement in 1991. In 1992 until his ultimate retirement in 2003, Gene was the media director for the Jacksonville Kennel Club. Gene touched many lives with is fun loving personality; his will to live was evident in his attempt to rehabilitate over the past 17 months from a stroke during a planned surgery. He shared his patented smile amidst the challenges countless times to family and multiple medical professionals in Gainesville, Florida, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The family thanks all in the medical community for their efforts. Gene will be missed. A celebration of life service will be held April 20, 2013 from 3-5 pm at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home-Mandarin off San Jose Blvd-one mile south of I-295. Casual attire per Gene's desire. In lieu of flowers, the family asks, if you desire, to make contributions to the Northeast Florida Community Hospice of Jacksonville, Florida or the University of Virginia Children's Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.
