Obituary Condolences

KORMENDI Mike Kormendi, 94, formerly of Mather, Pennsylvania, departed this life on July 30, 2013 at Community Hospice at Northeast Florida. He was born in Maxwell, Pennsylvania on October 6, 1918, the son of the late John Kormendi and Elizabeth Chizmadia Kormendi. He was a member of the Brownsville Presbyterian Hungarian Church and graduated from Jefferson-Morgan High School in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Kormendi served in WWII as a corpsman and combat engineer. He was one if the first to arrive after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan. He worked as a coal miner and retired from Gateway Coal Company after 34 years of service. He belonged to the Croatian Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a lifetime member of the American Legion and the United Mine Workers of America. He was an avid outdoorsman, skilled fisherman and prolific gardener. His passion was his family and preserving nature. He married his loving wife Ann Kormendi, September 6, 1947, and have been together for 65 years. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and James Knapp of Parkersburg, WV; his son and daughter-in-law John and Susan Kormendi of Jacksonville, Florida; one grandson Brian Mark Miller of Mooresville, North Carolina; sister Helen Vishak of Easter Liverpool, Ohio and brother Steve Kormendi of Orlando, Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Michael David Kormendi, sisters Katheryn Kerestes and Elizabeth Namolik, brothers John Kormendi and Alex Kormendi. A private service will be held in Jacksonville, Florida. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Jefferson, Pennsylvania. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
