CALVIN CHAPLIN Obituary
CHAPLIN Calvin Coolidge Chappy Chaplin, 89, passed away the morning of the 14th of September, 2013, with his family by his side. Chappy was born August 25, 1924 in Ravenel, SC. He was the first-born son of Joseph Oscar and Lottie (Newton) Chaplin. While serving in the Navy during WWII, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG and graduated from Northwestern University. In 1947, near the end of his naval service in Philadelphia, he met and subsequently married his wife of nearly 55 years, Anna Kochowicz. They moved to Jacksonville in 1953 where Chappy worked in finance his entire career, eventually retiring from Florida National Bank. Those lucky enough to know Chappy would agree that he never met a stranger; he was quick to laugh and ready with a good-natured comeback. He was a faithful lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. In his later years, he really enjoyed working with the Bishop s Storehouse. His participation in various service organizations underlined his commitment to helping others. He was a member of the Elks for over a half-century including a term as Exalted Ruler of BPOE Lodge 221. He was also a many-decade member of the Lions Club, winning the Liars Contest multiple times with some of his tall tales. He actively participated in the Big Brother program for many-years as well. Chappy enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially with his family. He was also a Master Gardener, producing bushel after bushel of fresh produce for family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, his brother, Joseph Oscar Chaplin, Jr. and his sister, Mildred Braddock. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Chaplin Vogel and her husband, Keith, of Houston, TX, his brothers Jack Chaplin (Edna) and Jim Chaplin, his sisters Eileen Boynton (Bill) and Betty Chivers, and also by his long-time companion, Ruby Thomas, of Jacksonville. There will be a viewing on Thursday, Sept. 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. Funeral Services will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 7665 Ft.
