JAMES LAY Obituary
LAY Mr. James Barden Jimmy Lay, Sr., age 71, formerly of Jacksonville, presently of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away on Sunday morning, October 13, 2013 at the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville. Born in Tifton, Georgia on October 11, 1942, he was the oldest of two sons born to the late Barden Ellis Lay Sr. and Edna Grace Lane Lay. As an infant his family moved to Jacksonville, FL where he and his brother were raised. In 1961 he joined the United States Air Force band, was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Phoenix Arizona before receiving a permanent assignment at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. and landing a prestigious position with the premier jazz band of the US Air Force, the Airmen of Note. The Airmen of Note carried on the tradition of the famous Glenn Miller Band and carried a similar bit of worldwide notoriety. While in the Note Jimmy traveled all over the United States, Europe and East Asia performing for the general public and participating in numerous jazz festivals in places like Monterey, Calif., Wichita, Kan., Newport, R.I., Detroit, Mich. and at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He appeared on such television shows as The Mike Douglas Show and The Tonight Show and performed with legendary jazz musicians such as Doc Severinsen, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Taylor, Joe Williams, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan and many more. After retiring from the Air Force Jimmy continued to freelance in the Washington D.C. area most notably with the Gene Donati Orchestra, a popular and sought after dance band, travelling around the country and performing for parties and debutante balls, weddings and other important events. He also enjoyed retirement and having time to spend with his grandchildren whether at birthdays, school musicals and performances or simply time at home beside the pool. An avid and talented amateur photographer, Jimmy enjoyed taking photos of people, nature and, of course, the family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Clyde Lay. Jimmy is survived by his wife of more than fifty-two years, Linda Garrett Lay, Fernandina Beach, FL, their three sons and their wives, James Barden Bart Lay Jr. (Andrea), Keyser, WV, William Lawrence Larry Lay II, (Amy), Severna Park, MD, Stephen Ellis Lay (Jeanne), Columbia, MD, eight grandchildren, Zoe, Zachary, Courtney, Garrett, Chelsea, Daniel, Peter, Katherine, a sister in law, Iris Sue Lay, St. Augustine, FL, a niece, Laura Frances Lay, Jacksonville, FL and a great niece, Madyson Grace Lay. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 17, 2013 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard Funeral Home, 1305 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach, FL with Pastor Beth Fogle-Miller of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Fernandina Beach, officiating. His family will receive friends on Thursday at the funeral home, from 1:00 pm until the hour of service.
