HORACE SMITH Obituary
SMITH Horace Elon Smith, Jr., 82, passed away at his home on October 20, 2013. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, he led a life full of integrity and humor. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 1, 1931, to May Stribling Smith and Horace Elon Smith, Sr., Horace spent most of his life in Jacksonville. In 1949, he graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, and in 1953, he graduated from Stetson University. While there, he wrote a popular newspaper column entitled, Memoirs of a Moron, and he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Horace was drafted into the United States Army as a Corporal attached to the Korean Military Advisory Group after college. Upon his return from Korea, Horace worked in the insurance field as a claims adjuster, claims manager and public insurance adjuster. His hobbies included stamp collecting, politics, music, jogging, reading and writing, as well as spending time outdoors with family. Horace modeled active Christian service by driving children to church on buses, teaching Sunday school, and giving away Bibles as a member of Gideons International, among other things. Horace is preceded in death by his son, Michael Peter Bagdanovich. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Dorothy Howard Smith; daughter, Bayne Bagdanovich Pounds (Jerry) of Pineville, Louisiana; daughter, Karin Bagdanovich Watson (Mike) of Daytona Beach; son, Robert Matthew Bagdanovich (Cristina) of Ocala; daughter, Stephanie Smith Guthrie (Bill) of Jacksonville; and daughter, Nancy Smith Bethea (Stan) of Callahan; ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service arrival time is 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 24, at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, Florida, 32218, (904) 766-5222. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 729 Edgewood Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida, 32205, (904) 388-2711.
