Philip Lyons Morley Obituary
MORLEY Philip Lyons Morley, 66, grew up at the Jacksonville Beaches and went on to develop a new line of insurance for golf courses. He died Tuesday at his home in Parrish, FL. He was 66. An avid golfer, he played youth baseball and was on the Fletcher High School track team. Mr. Morley graduated from the University of Florida in 1969 with a degree in business management and began his career in Jacksonville with Commercial Union Insurance Co. He earned the CPCU (commercial property casualty underwriter) designation. He moved to the Boston area before taking a position with Kapnick Insurance Group, of Adrian, MI, helping develop the agency into one of the nation's largest insurance brokers and becoming senior vice president at the company. His interests in insurance and golf led him to spot an underserved niche in property insurance. He created a program to provide coverage that meets the special needs of golf courses and country clubs. A gregarious, friendly man who most called Phil, he was a devoted husband, proud father, enthusiastic about sports, and interested in community. He collected many friends with his humor and smile. In Adrian, he was a member of the Lenawee Country Club and the Kiwanis Club. Two of his favorite songs, Wonderful World and Danny Boy expressed his passion for life and his Irish heritage. Mr. Morley was born in Norwich, CT, and moved to Jacksonville with his family when he was in 6th grade. They settled at Jacksonville Beach. At a teenage dance, he took notice of a young lady wearing a dress with a big bow and immediately took a liking to her. They married in 1968, pledging a mutual devotion that never waned. In addition to his wife Shirley, Mr. Morley leaves two daughters, Catherine Morley, of Venice Beach, CA, and Jennifer Morley, of Chatsworth, CA; a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Viviana Morley, of Adrian, MI; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Henry Stokes, of Germantown, TN; a sister-in-law, Katherine Park, of Kansas City; and a brother-in-law, Patrick Park, of Covington, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Carolyn McCormick Morley, and his grandfather, Daniel McCormick (all who came to Jacksonville from Norwich), and by a brother-in-law, Michael Park. A celebration of Mr. Morley's life will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the River Wilderness Golf & Country Club, 2250 Wilderness Blvd. West, Parrish, FL. 34219. (941) 776-2691. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Bradenton, FL, is assisting. The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the River Wilderness Club fund to purchase automatic defibrillators and CPR training for the community.
