Enlisting in the Navy in 1942, he completed Colgate in two and a half years within the ROTC program. He proceeded to Cornell for Officers Training School and was commissioned as an Ensign in November 1944. He was deployed on the US East Coast and was headed for Japan at the time the Atom Bomb ended WWII. After the war, Sherb entered Harvard Law School, graduating with the Class of 1949. He started his legal career in the New Jersey State Attorney's Office within the Eisenhower Administration. In 1956, he joined the legal department of Union Carbide in New York City, where he spent his career, advancing from management to Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs. He retired from Union Carbide in 1986. Sherb was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed golf, basketball, politics, travel and reading. He was very personable, had a warm nature, and a wonderful sense of humor making him a delight to be around. He was a board member of several golf clubs as well as a cofounder of Baker Hill Golf Club in Newbury, NH. Married in 1955, he is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Harriet Ruffner Stone Hart, and his four children and their spouses: Alden Sherburne Hart Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Cantlay Hart, of Arlington, VA; Pamela Warfield Hart of Phoenix, AZ; Marcia Andrews Hart and her partner, Susan Lawrence, of Baltimore, MD; and Cynthia Ruffner Hart Montgomery and her husband, William Harland Montgomery III, of Burlingame, CA. Dear Hatsy,
Sherb was my first "boss's boss" in the Carbide Law Dept. when I started in 1971. He was always a mentor to me, providing increasing responsibilities over the years. After his career change to corporate public affairs, he offered me the opportunity to move into government affairs, eventually leading me to Washington, where I retired in 2001. Sherb was not just my boss, but a good friend. I remember fondly the occasional social events, including watching in awe when we played golf at Sawgrass a couple of times.
Merrie and I send our condolences and best wishes to you and your family.

Dear Hatsy,
You may remember I worked for Sherb as the Director of Community Affairs and remember times in New Jersey and Connecticut when you graciously hosted events in your home. We even played golf once together at Baltustrol country club and you kindly gave me some golf tips. I lost my wife 15 months ago after 59 years of marriage and so I understand your grief at this moment. I will never forget the opportunity that Sherb gave me in my career and his support. May God bless you and your family during this time.

Hatsy, You are a fond friend and we share in your sadness on Sherb's passing. We will never forget all the wonderful times we spent together not only in PVB,New Hampshire, but also in SE Asia. Our love to you and your beautiful family. Sherb was a wonderful man and will be missed.

I hired in to Union Carbide in 1981 in the Public Affairs Group under Sherb's leadership. He was always accessible, good-natured and liberal with a wry quip. UCC's reputation in my home town of Danbury was that of a "class act." That reputation was embodied by Sherb. Condolences to Hatsie and family.
