Rayford L. Jones, 51, of Gaines, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at home.
Born May 26, 1962 in Wellsboro, he was a son of John and Frances (Cole) Jones of Gaines.
Ray was a 1981 graduate of Galeton High School. After high school he joined the United States Air Force
and recently retired as a Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force, Ray was a Support Service Specialist and Chief of Military Personnel at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC. He received the following awards, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, NCO PME Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and the Air Force Training Ribbon. Apart from his busy military career, Ray was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved the outdoors.
In addition to his parents, John and Frances Jones, he is survived by two daughters, Raychele (Ray) Jackson, Roanoke, Va.; Michele (Adam) DeMartin, Fort Jackson, S.C.; a brother, Ronald (Amanda) Jones, Tenn.; four sisters, Tammy Hamberger, Wellsboro; Cherie (Robert) Vannatter, Mills; Deborah (Paul Morris) Jones-Elias, Millville, Pa.; Marcia (Hershel) Holsomback, Middlebury Center.
Friends called at the Hess Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Galeton, on Thursday, May 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. A funeral service followed at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Keith Paris officiating.
Burial was made in the Sabinsville Cemetery, Sabinsville. Military Honors were accorded by the Tioga County Honor Guard.
