Ferne Terry Schanbacher, 91, of Mansfield, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died at Metrowest Medical Center, Framingham, Mass., on Friday, April 12, 2013.
She was born Dec. 2, 1921, in East Mauch Chunk, the daughter of Russell B. and Eva May Souders Terry.
Ferne is survived by two sons, Terry L. of Northfield, Conn., Robert L. of Cogan Station; two daughters, Sandra L. Beagan of Mansfield, Mass., Jill A. Howarth of Westborough, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Gerry; two sons, Ronald L. and Richard D.; sisters, Arabelle Edwards, Marlea Thomas and brother, Russell A. Terry.
Ferne was a graduate of Mansfield State Teachers College (Mansfield University), a member of the class of 1943 where in addition to excelling in her studies she also was a member of the Women's Athletic Association and a cheerleader for four years. A home economics major, she taught in Mauch Chunk during the war. She was a member of the Mansfield First United Methodist Church where she was very active in the life of the church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Eastern Star. Ferne returned to teaching in 1966 and continued on as a fifth grade science teacher at the Warren L. Miller School until she retired in 1987.
Friends are invited to call at the Gary Wilston Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 130 S. Main St., Mansfield,Thursday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, Friday, April 19, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Jon West officiating. Burial will be in East Point Cemetery. The family requests that memorial donations in Ferne's memory be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Garden Fund, 67 East Wellsboro St., Mansfield, Pa. 16933, or the .
