The Reverend Kay Irene Dry Schwab, 68, of Lykens, passed away Friday, May 16, 2014 at her daughter's home in Virginia under the care of hospice.
Born Feb. 23, 1946, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Melvin A. and Jane Kern Dry.
She graduated from Mansfield High School in 1964 and Mansfield State College in 1968. She was employed as a home economics teacher for the Southern Tioga School District until she left to stay home and raise her children. She earned her Masters of Science in home economics in 1987. She was very active in the First United Methodist Church in Mansfield, which led to her decision to pursue ordination as a United Methodist pastor. She served as a local pastor at Middle Ridge and Grover-Shunk, and then as a student pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church in Attleboro, Mass. She graduated from Boston University's School of Theology with a Masters of Divinity in 1997. She served appointments in the Susquehanna United Methodist Conference in Windfall, Sugar Valley, and Lykens United Methodist churches.
Kay is survived by her daughters, Jennifer D. (Craig) Swain of Leesburg, Va., Jane M. (Mark) Spohn of Mansfield; her sister, Sondra D. (Charles) Yarrison of Oley; her brothers-in law Tom (Marge) Schwab of Horseheads, N.Y., Frank (Susan) Schwab of Towanda; her sister-in-law Linda Schwab Farrer of Mansfield; her grandchildren, Cade Swain, Jordan Spohn, Sarah Spohn, Megan Spohn, John Spohn; her great-grandson, Daniel Fortney; and several nieces and nephews.
Kay's viewing (10 a.m.) and service (11 a.m.) will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Mansfield, on Wednesday, May 21, with the Rev. Thomas R. Searfoss officiating.Her burial will follow on Thursday, May 22, at Union Cemetery in Bellefonte. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mansfield Free Public Library or to the Organ Fund of the Lykens United Methodist Church, 527 North Second St., Lykens, Pa. 17048.
