Irene Rumsey Messing, 93, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro.
Mrs. Messing was born to Dean and Helen (Crum) Rumsey on Feb. 1, 1921, in Sayre. She was wed to Frederick Messing on Aug. 2, 1943, at the Daggett United Methodist Church.
While growing up, she worked in her father's bakery and upon graduation from the Mansfield State Teachers College, began her teaching career in the one room school house in Coryland. Irene then went on to be employed by Millerton Elementary School for over 30 years as both a teacher and then a principal. She loved to learn and was a lifelong educator. With a stern classroom discipline, she was remembered by many sixth graders, including both her daughters. Her enjoyment of geography and history came through in her lessons. Later in life, she loved to tap trees and boil maple syrup with her husband. As a member of the Daggett community and the Daggett United Methodist Church for over 80 years, she taught Sunday School, was president of the United Methodist Women, and was secretary of the Daggett Cemetery Association. With her husband, they acted as caretakers of the Daggett Cemetery for over 20 years. Irene was an avid traveler who was always ready for a trip. Well into her Golden years, she enjoyed cruising the Caribbean or go on adventures with her family to Belize, Guatemala or Costa Rica. As a fan of sports, she loved watching football and particularly her grandsons playing. All her life, she enjoyed reading, bird watching, gardening, and cherished time with her family. Her life in three words: Family, Faith, Strength.
Mrs. Messing is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Messing, and survived by two daughters, Ann and Tom Nickeson of Bicknell, Utah and Lisa and Mark Tuttle of Redmond, Wash. She is further survived by five grandchildren, William Linder, Heather Linder Spring, Stephanie, Jennifer and Daniel Tuttle and a great-granddaughter, Alyvia Spring. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sibling, Evelyn Rumsey Norton.
