Mary E. Worthington, 73, of Wellsboro, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
She was born Aug, 23, 1940, in Rockland, Del., the daughter of the late Mervin S. and Annabelle (Ronk) Blank.
Mary was employed by the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce since 1973, serving as the executive director. She also served as the Executive Secretary/Treasurer of Growth Resources of Wellsboro Foundation, an industrial development corporation, and as Executive Director and Treasurer of the Wellsboro Foundation, a charitable organization, sponsor of the Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival. In her position with the Chamber of Commerce, Mary worked cooperatively with many local agencies and organizations on matters of tourism, beautification/community enhancement, economic development, Historic District designation; including the Wellsboro Borough Council, Wellsboro Parks and Recreation, the Tioga County Commissioners, Laurel Health System, Penn College of Technology, University of Scranton Small Business Development Center, PennDOT, and others. Mary served as treasurer for the Northern Appalachian Storytelling Festival for over 21 years. She also worked with the Susquehannock Trail Pro Rally organizers since the event was brought to Wellsboro over 20 years ago. She was a member of the State Transportation Advisory Committee, appointed by Governor Ridge in 1996. She was chairperson of Tioga Management Services Organizations, Inc. She was a director of Tioga County Development Corporation, a member of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce Executives, member of Pennsylvania Economic Development Association, member of Keystone State Railroad Association, served on the advisory board of Tioga County Human Service Agency, the advisory board of the Pennsylvania College of Technology. She was a participant in the Travel Pennsylvania Association Certificate Program and was the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from the Federal Aviation Authority, March 1996, for her support during development of Grand Canyon State Airport. She was a member of the Wellsboro Rotary Club. She moved to Wellsboro, Tioga County, in 1971 from Radnor. Her hobbies included reading and gardening.
Surviving are her sons, Stephen Worthington and his soul mate, Jodie McCracken of Wellsboro, Andrew S. Worthington (Kristine) of Wellsboro; her brother, Samuel M. Blank of West Chester; five grandchildren, Dustin, Charlotte, Noah, Elliot, Tucker; three great-grandchildren, Carter, Lennon and Seneca Grace. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Blank and sisters, Charlotte Rae Henry and Sidney Gray.
Friends and family are invited to Mary's Life Celebration on Saturday, July 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, "A Life Celebration Home," 139 Main St., Wellsboro. Funeral will follow at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Canon Gregory Hinton. Burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Mary's memory to the Wellsboro Rotary Club, P.O. Box 961, Wellsboro, Pa. 16901.
