James Gilfert Obituary

James C. Gilfert, PhD
James C. Gilfert, PhD, P.E., 85, formerly of Tamaqua, died Wednesday, May 1, in Ohio.
Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Leah Gilfert.
He was interested in communications and electronics from an early age, building his own radio set before he graduated from Tamaqua High School.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1945. After being discharged in 1946, he entered Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he received his bachelor of science degree. He then earned master of science and doctorate degrees from the Ohio State University.
He taught electrical engineering at the university level for 36 years.
He and his wife, the former Sara McCalmont, also founded, owned and operated an electronics manufacturing business, Athens Technical Specialists, Inc., that creates and sells traffic systems testing equipment, and the BuckEye Cam.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three children, Susan, Ted and Charles; and five grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by an older brother Charles "Hub."
