Oblas, Anna M. - Jim Thorpe
Mrs. Anna M. Oblas Mrs. Anna M. "Ann" Oblas, 87, of Andreas, formerly of Jim Thorpe, died Saturday, Dec. 13, in The Summit at Blue Mountain nursing facility, Lehighton, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Wilmington, Del., she was a daughter of the late Pasquale "Patsy" and Mary (Gall) Mele. Her family relocated to New Colum-bus when Ann was very young. They eventually moved to Jim Thorpe, where she lived most of her life. One of her earliest jobs was as a ticket taker and organist at the Capital Theatre in Mauch Chunk. She later worked outside of her home for several garment factories, including the Mary Ann Dress Factory, Bernice Ann Fashions and Michelle Fashions, all in Jim Thorpe; Barson and Bishop, Weissport; and she retired from Scotty's Fashions, Lehighton, in 1989. Ann married Stephen J. Oblas on July 1, 1950, and was his loving companion until his death in November, 2009. They resided on West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, until moving to Andreas in 2003. She will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid reader, a talented musician (piano, organ and accordion), a great cook, and a skilled seamstress. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe, and was a one-time member of the Catholic Daughters. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: daughters Carol, wife of Richard Klinger of Stroudsburg, Ann Marie, wife of Brian L. Steigerwalt of Andreas, Mary Ellen, wife of David Grotenhuis of Jasper, Ga., and Elizabeth, wife of David L. Arndt of Lehighton; a son, Stephen Jr., and his wife, Stephanie (Rupert), of Hellertown; nine grandsons, Matthew and Michael Klinger, Gregory Steigerwalt, Timothy and Tate Grotenhuis, Christopher and Nicholas Oblas and David A. and Darrin Arndt; a great-granddaughter, Elise Peele; and two stepgrandsons, Dennis Cope and Tyler Tadora. Ann is also survived by three sisters, Mary Jane Searfoss of Lehighton, Elizabeth "Bette" Kochie of Jim Thorpe and Doris Rothermel of Walnutport; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Mauro Mele, Jim Thorpe, in August, 1981. Ann's decline due to her illness was handled lovingly, first by her daughter, Ann Marie, who cared for her in her home, with the help of her family. She spent several years at The Village at Palmerton before moving to The Summit. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate and competent care she received at both facilities. Service: Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe; Mass of the Christian Burial 11 a.m., Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 180 W.
