Arthur Sheckler, 91, of Lehighton, passed away on Sunday, March 10, in the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove, N.J.
- Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Ada and William Sheck-ler.
He grew up in Lehighton and was a 1939 graduate of Lehighton High School, where he excelled in sports, lettering in football and basketball.During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and became a TBF pilot. After the war, he returned to Lehighton and married his wife, Mary "Peg." They were married for 63 years before she died in February, 2012.
He worked a variety of jobs, including the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Genetti's Supermarket, Nothstein Oil Company, and, lastly, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, retiring in 1984.
Arthur was an avid golfer into the 1980s.
He was active in the community as a member of the Lehighton Lions Club and the Last Man's Club of the American Legion Post 314, Lehighton, and as a volunteer for many years delivering for Meals on Wheels.
Surviving are a brother William; a son Michael, and his wife, Ruth; two grandchildren, Eric, and his wife, Holly, and Kimberly; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Luke.
He was also preceded in death by a son Steven; and siblings, Harrison, Arnold, Edna, Betty Zimmerman and Joyce Hahn. Service:
