Benjamin O. Smith
Benjamin O. "Ben" Smith, 78, of White Street, Weissport, died Saturday, Dec. 28, in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Margaret A. (Rudolph) Smith.
He was an over-road-truck driver, owning and operating his own truck. He retired in 1996 after more than 40 yearsBorn in Dalton, Lackawanna County, he was a son of the late Douglas J. and Elnora I. (Squire) Smith.
- They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on May 14, 2013.
He had served with the U.S. Army in Co. A as a SP3 during the Korean War, having been stationed in Japan and Korea.
Smith was an avid hunter. He liked to work in his garage as a backyard mechanic.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Donna, wife of Charles Freeby of Mechanicsburg, and Denise, wife of Walter Rehrig of Lehighton; two sons, Benjamin Daniel, and his companion, Sandra Bunnell, of Meshoppen, and Daniel John of Weissport; a sister Jeanette of Factoryville; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
He was also predeceased by a daughter, Dawn M. Frehulfer; a brother Douglas; and a sister Madeline.
Service: Funeral service 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, 200 Franklin St., Weissport, with the Rev. John P. Hassler officiating. Graveside service noon, Monday, Jan. 6, Lehighton Cemetery. Call 5-7 p.m. Thursday.
