Francis G. "Francy" Hinkle, 85, of Hometown, passed away on Saturday, July 5, in the Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hometown, after a long illness. He was the husband of Josephine (Calabrese) Hinkle. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 20.
He was employed by the former Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds, for 37 years before retiring in 1991.
Born in Beaver Meadows, he was a son of the late Claude and Jenny (Craglow) Hinkle.
A 1946 graduate of Hazleton High School, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1952 after serving during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Tamaqua American Legion Post, Tamaqua, where he recently received an award for 50 years of membership.
The deceased loved music and singing and was a 50-year member of the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America), the local Mahanoy City/Tamaqua Chapter and the Coal Cracker Chorus, where he served a term as president. He attended many regional and national SPEBSQSA competition conventions.
Hinkle also sang in the choir at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Tamaqua, for many years, and was a life member of the Hometown Fire Company and the Tamaqua Area Senior Citizens.
He was of the Catholic faith and belonged to St. John XXIII Catholic Church (formerly St. Jerome Catholic Church), Tamaqua.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Francine, wife of Jeffrey Eames of Exton, and Janet, wife of Charles Burrell of Tamaqua; four sisters-in-law, Theresa Dunkelberger of Tamaqua, Mary Durso and Shirley Hinkle, both of Hazleton, and Irene Calabrese of Nesquehoning; a brother-in-law, Frank Calabrese of Tamaqua; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jenny Sarno and Pearl (Woodring) August of Florida; and five brothers, Edgar Woodring, Robert Hinkle, Oliver Hinkle and Harry Hinkle, all of the Hazleton area, and Herbert Hinkle of Illinois.
