Gordon W. Tonkin, husband, father and grandfather, 60, of High Street, Tamaqua, died Friday, Nov. 30, in the St. Luke Hospital, Fountain Hill, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Mary Rose (Banditelli) Tonkin. They were married for 27 years.
Gordy worked for Air Products and Chemicals, Hometown, for 34 years, and previously was employed by the former Atlas Powder Co., Reynolds.
Born in Coaldale, he was a son of Jean (Hochstatter) Tonkin of Tamaqua and the late Gordon E. Tonkin, who died July 22, 2004.
Gordy was a 1970 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, where he was a standout athlete, and attended L.C.C.C.
Gordy enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War
He was a member of the East End Fire Co. and American Legion Post 173, both of Tamaqua, and the Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, Local 917.
Gordy helped coach his children while they participated in Tamaqua Knee-Hi and Biddie and Little League Baseball programs.
Surviving in addition to his widow and mother are a daughter, Allison R. of Tamaqua; two sons, Damian R. Fritz, and his wife, Kristen, of Eagle Rock, and Gordon R. Tonkin of Tamaqua; a sister, Marilyn J., wife of William Stickler of Midlothian, Va.; four grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, Ava, and Addison; a nephew, Jason Stickler, and his wife, Shannon; and two nieces, Danielle and Tara Symore.
