Herbert J. Gasker, 90, of 249 N. Sixth St., Lehighton, passed away Sunday, March 16, in his residence. He was the husband of Phyllis I. (Harleman) Gasker. They were married for 69 years on April 9, 2013.
He retired from the Hontz Oil Co. as a truck driver in 1985 after 26 years of service, and previously had worked for over 15 years for the former Lehigh Navigation Co. in the coal mining industry in the Nesquehoning and Lansford region.
Born in Hackelbernie (Jim Thorpe), he was a son of the late Frank and Martha (Hoeffler) Gasker.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, having attained the rank of Tech 5 with with the 9301st Tech Service Unit.
He was a very active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehighton, where he sang in the choir and served on the council.
An enthusiastic vocalist, he was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Club and was actively involved with the SPEBSQSA.
Gasker was a member of American Legion Post 314 and a life member of Lehigh Fire Co. No. 1, both of Lehighton.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three daughters, Alice A., wife of Dr. Jerry Frantz of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., Dr. Janice A. of Fleetwood and Adele A. Germanio of Easton; four sons, Karl J., and his wife, Vivian, of Bath, Herbert A., and his wife, Deanna, of Jim Thorpe, Phillip J., and his wife, Myra, of Franklin Township, and Kris J., and his wife, Denise, of Lehighton; a sister, Gloria Remmel of Jim Thorpe; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister Elizabeth; and seven brothers, Frank, Arthur, Walter, Bernard, Max, Daniel and James.
Service: Celebration of Life service 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehighton, with SALM Emma Weaver officiating. Interment will full military honor, Lehighton Cemetery, under direction of Lehighton UVO.
