James R. Shirey

James Robert Shirey, 72, of 18 Williams St., Barnesville, passed away Monday, April 8, in his residence. He was the husband of Mabel C. (Miller) Shirey.
Prior to retiring, he was an electro-mechanical-chemical engineer for the I.B.M Corporation, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He later opened the JRS Sporting Goods Store, Tamaqua.
Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late George and Hazle (Fletcher) Shirey.
He was an avid sportsman.
Shirey was an Army veteran of the Caribbean Crisis and the Panama Canal.
He served as a captain in the Delano Fire Co. and was a life member of the Ryan Twp. Rescue Squad.
Shirey was on the board of the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. He was an emergency responder and CPR instructor, blood drive coordinator, dive commander and trained in search and rescue.
He was a member of the N.R.A., N.Y. Sheriffs Assoc., Pa. Sheriffs Assoc. and the F.O.P. Schuylkill-Carbon Lodge. He also served on the planning committee of Ryan Twp.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Christine Harris of Quakake; three grandchildren, Michael Harris, Heather Harris and James Harris, all of Mahanoy City; six great-grandchildren, his pride and joy, Nicholas, Jason, Seth, Natoli, CiCi and Bella; and nieces and nephews.
Service: Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown, with the Rev. Janet Kline officiating. Call 6-9 p.m. Friday.
