Joseph F. DeLay, 86, of Jim Thorpe, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, after four years in Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Lehighton.
Born June 12, 1926 in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late William and Ida Brachman DeLay.
Joseph and his wife Beverly celebrated 57 years of marriage in June.
He graduated from St. Jerome's School in Tamaqua after serving in the U.S. Army from Feb. 26, 1945 to Oct. 21, 1946.
He worked on the railroad for 50 years and belonged to the United Transportation Union.
He was a life-time member of the East End Fire Company, Tamaqua, and the Fairview Fire company, Jim Thorpe.
He enjoyed hunting with his family, attended all his grandsons' sporting events, and was an avid Notre Dame fan.
Joseph will be lovingly missed by his wife, Beverly; his sister, Mary Jane Kammetler; his daughter, Melanie Vanderbeck (Tom); his grandsons, Joseph Betz (Stephanie) and Eric Betz (Jamie); his two great-grandsons, Dominic and Carter Betz; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Machamer, and brothers Frederick, William, Edward (Teddy), John, and Robert (Bip).
Services: Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe with Pastor Brad Leight officiating. Call 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 10-11 a.m. Monday.
