Zimmerman Kenneth W. Zimmerman, 81, of Mountain Road, Tamaqua, died Monday, April 28, in his home.
He lived in the Lewistown Valley for most of his life.Prior to retiring, he and his wife owned the former Anchor Deep on Spruce Street, Tamaqua, operating a popular seafood store as well as a refrigeration and storage facility.
- He was the husband of the late Gloria J. Zimmerman, who died Oct. 9, 2013.
His first job was assisting his father in the milk processing and delivery business, the Leiby Farms Dairy.
In 1956, he and his brothers, Ronald and Floyd, purchased the dairy business and formed a corporation known as Leiby's Dairy, Inc. The company was jointly owned until 1992, when it was sold to Kenneth's children, Keith and Kathy, and their respective spouses, Carla Zimmerman and William Parks.
In 1964, the Zimmerman brothers formed a corporation known as Leiby's Dairy Stores, Inc., opening Leiby's Ice Cream House and Restaurant in May of 1965. The restaurant was sold on April 1, 1991.
Kenneth was active in all of the family businesses during those years.
Born in Hamburg, he was a son of the late Walter R. and Emma (Leiby) Zimmerman.
He was a member of Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley and the Word Family Church, Harwood.
A 1950 graduate of Tamaqua High School, he participated in many activities with his immediate family and loved to hunt and fish with his brothers and many friends, activities he did very effectively. An avid deer hunter, he hunted in the western U.S., harvesting a goodly number of nice bucks as well as small game. He also hunted and fished in Canada, but loved to fish in the Cold Run Creek and Upper Little Schuylkill River as well as other local streams.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Jo Zimmerman, and her husband, William L. Parks, of Orwigsburg; a son Keith, and his wife, Carla, of New Ringgold; three grandsons, Taylor Parks and Zachary and Tyler Zimmerman; and three brothers, Floyd R., and his wife, Peggy, and Ronald C., and his wife, Peggy, both of the Lewistown Valley, and Robert A., and his wife, Barbara, of Charlotte, N.C.
Service: Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley, with the Revs. Jim Williams and Hugh Lupien officiating. Interment, parish cemetery.
