Shirley May Readly, 79, of Mauch Chunk St., Tamaqua, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale.
Born in Delaware County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ada (Dannenhower) Simmers.
Shirley was the first female hired by Bethlehem Steel in mining operation as a spotter.
She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church of Tamaqua.
She was a 1952 graduate of Philadelphia Agriculture High School.
She is survived by her daughter, Denise Hazlett of New Ringgold; three sons, Jerry W. Hazlett and Chris Hazlett of Tamaqua; and Nicholas Hazlett of Jim Thorpe; a brother, Walter Schoenwetter; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Peter Schoenwetter.
